Bologna, Italy’s seventh-largest city, is taking significant steps to address health inequalities, particularly in the management of diabetes, a condition that has been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the city’s public health efforts, spearheaded by the Cities for Better Health program, that are drawing attention to critical health disparities among its residents. The Cities for Better Health initiative in Bologna is designed to identify and address health inequalities within the municipality. One of the program's key findings has been the inverse relationship between income levels and diabetes prevalence. Data collected as part of the program’s mapping process revealed that adults living in high-income areas of Bologna’s southern region had a significantly lower prevalence of diabetes (3.2%) compared to those in low-income neighborhoods in the north-western part of the city, where the prevalence is more than double at 6.5%.
This disparity lays bare a critical public health issue: socioeconomic factors are significantly influencing health outcomes in Bologna. Residents in low-income areas are not only more susceptible to diabetes but also face heightened risks from complications related to COVID-19. During the pandemic, it was found that people with type 2 diabetes in Bologna had a mortality rate almost three times higher (19.6%) than the general population (6.6%). This alarming statistic prompted an urgent response from the Cities for Better Health program to improve Bologna’s health industry.
In collaboration with local partners, the program initiated targeted interventions in the areas most affected by diabetes and obesity. These interventions are evidence-based and tailored to address the specific needs of vulnerable populations. The initiative also seized the opportunity presented by the pandemic to gather critical data on the interplay between diabetes and COVID-19, leading to new insights into the health challenges faced by Bologna’s residents.
