France’s health industry is one of the biggest contributors to the nation’s economy as it generates €90 billion in revenues, with 35% of that coming from exports. The industry not only supports nearly 455,000 jobs but is also home to over 3,100 life sciences companies, ranging from startups to multinationals. These companies are unified under the French Healthcare brand, an initiative that aims to support innovation and competitive quality for healthcare in France.
The French government’s Healthcare Innovation 2030 strategy is the backbone of the sector. With nearly €7 billion earmarked to boost innovative investments. Key initiatives include streamlining clinical trial authorization processes, simplifying the management of healthcare innovation, and supporting industrial investments in emerging fields. This ambitious plan also focuses on revitalizing biomedical research through a cluster-based approach. One of the pillars of France’s healthcare strategy is the public-private initiative known as French Healthcare. This initiative brings together the ecosystem's key players—companies, researchers, healthcare professionals, and innovation clusters—to promote their expertise and technologies on the international stage
France’s attractiveness as a healthcare investment destination is further aided by very favorable government policies. The “credit impôt recherche” (research tax credit) is one such incentive, designed to foster innovation by reducing the financial burden on companies engaged in R&D. This, combined with specific funding initiatives, makes France an appealing choice for healthcare entrepreneurs and multinational companies alike. According to a survey by EY, 65% of foreign investors find France more attractive than other European countries in terms of technological innovation and business opportunities.
It's also world noting that the health industry in France provides a major pull for major international healthcare companies. American giants like Pfizer have an extensive footprint, but the interest extends beyond U.S. borders. Nordic companies, particularly from Denmark, have a longstanding relationship with France.
