In fact, France far outpaces Germany, Portugal and Italy by a wide margin in the private swimming pool market. By the end of 2021 alone, more than 3.2 million pools were installed; no clearer indication is needed that the sector is doing phenomenal even if the economic climate seems somewhat unfavorable. France now boasts one swimming pool for every 38 people and around 15% of households living in single-family homes in France now have their own pool, nearly evenly split between in-ground installations and fixed above-ground models larger than 10 square meters. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a key catalyst for this acceleration. In 2020, as lockdowns forced people to stay home, demand for home improvements spiked. If you had to spend all your time at home, wouldn’t you want a pool to soak in and relax? The answer of the French was a resounding yes and France’s swimming pool industry had a record year with pool sales up 8.5% and a 5.5% increase in new builds reported in the first half of the year. That momentum carried through 2021, marking what many industry observers now view as the sector’s golden era. The total number of swimming pools in France rose from 2.5 million in 2018 to over 3 million in just three years. In some regions, such as Hauts-de-France, demand more than doubled within 24 months. The spring of 2021 saw an exceptional revenue surge of 51%, and pool construction jumped by 52.5% during the first six months alone. Overall, the industry saw a 55% increase in both unit sales and value compared to the same period in 2020.
