The gems industry in France has a long tradition with the country largely to this day being linked to luxury jewellery and opulence. There are numerous players that shape the French market and influence the global gems trade. One of them is Maison Piat, which is regarded as a keeper of tradition. The company prides itself on preserving the centuries-old art of gem cutting that was once synonymous with the Jura region of France. In its heyday in the early 20th century, the Jura mountains were alive with the sound of skilled artisans, known as lapidaires, shaping rough gems into exquisite works of art. However, like many traditional crafts, the rise of competition from Asia has dwindled their numbers, leaving only a handful of workshops scattered across France.
Maison Piat, founded in 1983, is one such workshop, carrying forward the legacy of gem cutting with unwavering dedication and craftsmanship. Established by the son-in-law of a Jura gem-cutter, Maison Piat prides itself on its team of five highly skilled gem-cutters who specialize in working with center gemstones. What sets Maison Piat apart is not just its commitment to tradition but also its dedication to ethical practices. In 2013, the company was recognized with the prestigious Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, acknowledging its use and development of traditional skills. Furthermore, in 2020, Maison Piat became the first in the colored stones industry to receive certification from the Responsible Jewellery Council, ensuring that only ethically sourced gems are used in their work.
Gem cutting is a complex skill that requires a lifetime to master. Each gemstone possesses unique qualities, and the art of the lapidary lies in maximizing its brilliance and color while preserving its natural beauty. The distinction between lapidaires, who work with colored stones, and diamantaires, who specialize in diamonds, is crucial.
