Sustainability is the major throughline across the packing and packaging industry in France, which is a critical condition for national manufacturers to succeed in the expanding industry. Sustainable packaging has become a defining trend in France, with manufacturers focusing on reducing plastic waste and adopting biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable alternatives. French consumers are increasingly aware of packaging's environmental impact and are pushing for solutions that balance functionality and eco-friendliness. According to the French Union of Cardboard, Paper, and Cellulose Industries (COPACEL), paper and paperboard usage for packaging rose from 64.3% in 2020 to 70% in 2023, which is a clear indicator for the industry shift toward greener materials. Legislative measures have also played a critical role in shaping the market. In December 2020, the French Parliament passed a law banning all single-use plastic products and packaging by 2040. Leading firms are actively investing in sustainable solutions to align with these regulations and consumer expectations.
These are the conditions that have led to the rise of flexible packaging as a solution. This type of packaging includes pouches, bags, and wraps, and is gaining traction due to its cost-effectiveness, lightweight properties, and adaptability across various industries. Manufacturers are increasingly using flexible materials for food, cosmetics, personal care, and e-commerce applications. Stand-up pouches, in particular, have surged in popularity for snacks, beverages, baby food, and even industrial applications due to their material efficiency and reduced food waste. Companies like Amcor Group are leading the charge. In December 2023, Amcor supplied French cheese producer Fromagerie Milleret with recyclable paper-based flexible packaging for its premium cheeses. Their AmFiber Matrix packaging not only extends shelf life but also enables producers to control moisture levels, ensuring quality and sustainability. To meet the increasing demand for paper-based solutions, French manufacturers are expanding production capacity.
