Lyon’s relationship with medicine goes back to the Middle Ages and has led to the development of one of the most technologically forward health industries in Europe. The city was known for its early medical services provided by hospital orders under Catholic rule, which meant that some of Europe’s most renowned doctors worked in Lyon. Nothing has changed since the time of Laennec, Mérieux, and Rabelais. Over the past two decades, Lyon has solidified its position as a valuable player in France’s health industry. The city has enjoyed a noticeable influx of personnel; 34% increase in pharmaceutical industry professionals, moving mostly from Paris. This migration has a simple explanation – the presence of the Lyonbiopôle research center, which has overseen 119 projects worth €588 million in just seven years. Lyon’s healthcare ecosystem is bolstered by its strong educational foundation, with 35 higher education establishments, including nine universities and 550 research labs. The region is home to 20% of France’s R&D centers, making it a crucial hub for life sciences. The city also boasts exceptional international research facilities such as the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the Institut Laue Langevin. The Lyonbiopôl, as a cluster, focuses on sectors such as biotechnology, immuno-infectiology, vaccines, diagnostics, oncology, and neurology. Complementing this is the i-Care cluster, which brings together players from the entire health technology value chain in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, further solidifying Lyon’s reputation as a center for healthcare innovation. The BIOASTER Technology Research Institute, another cornerstone of Lyon’s healthcare sector, drives research and development in microbiology, supporting innovative projects that contribute to the city’s status as a leading life sciences hub. With nearly 100,000 jobs in the healthcare sector, Lyon is France’s second-largest employer in life sciences, demonstrating its critical role in the national and international health landscape.
