Paris is undergoing a fervent transformation in its approach to architecture. Architecture firms shift towards sustainable urban development and mobility. Adaptive reuse, restoration and the use of eco-friendly materials predominate Parisian architects’ toolboxes as they reshape the face of the City of Lights through environmentally conscious ways. A green future in alignment with France’s net zero emission goals is dawning on the horizon. Two projects illustrate this transformation. The first is the Paris 2024 Olympic Athletes' Village, which is designed by PETITDIDIERPRIOUX. This development in an eco-district within the city emphasizes sustainable construction practices. Comprising residences, offices, medical facilities, and more, the village showcases a harmonious integration of diverse housing typologies with the surrounding landscape. Once the Olympics conclude, the Athletes' Village will transition into its Legacy Phase, where it will transform into social housing. The bio-based structures at the heart of this project rely heavily on wood, featuring a regular structural framework that ensures adaptability and reliability. PETITDIDIERPRIOUX has meticulously followed a set of common design principles throughout the area to create a unified and consistent visual language. The second project that shows the municipality’s and architects’ dedication to urban development in line with green principles is the introduction of the first urban cable car, Câble 1. This 4.5-kilometer cable car system will connect Villeneuve-Saint-Georges with the Créteil Pointe du Lac station on Metro Line 8. Construction is scheduled to commence in late 2023 with the system expected to be operational by 2025. The decision to implement a cable car system was driven by the hilly terrain of the suburbs, which limited the construction of traditional metro and train lines. Each station along the route will exhibit unique design elements, enhancing the passenger experience. The cable car will improve mobility, reduce overall traffic and reduce overall car emissions.
