Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is ready to shed its image as the world’s hub for oil and gas, the backbone of its energy industry, and remake itself as a rising star within the rapidly expanding sustainable energy sector. At the forefront of Abu Dhabi’s energy transformation is the Noor Abu Dhabi solar plant, the largest single-site solar power facility in the world. This monumental project is expected to slash the UAE’s carbon footprint by one million metric tonnes annually. Abu Dhabi has also launched the Masdar Initiative, which has invested over USD 15 billion in various renewable energy programs since its inception. Masdar focuses on developing and commercializing cutting-edge technologies in solar and wind power, energy efficiency, carbon management, and water usage. With more than USD 4 billion allocated to solar and wind projects specifically, Masdar is an unrelenting driving force for innovation in sustainable energy solutions. But renewable energy is only the first step as Abu Dhabi sets its sights on making massive moves towards carbon neutrality, resulting in the region’s first industrial-scale Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) facility in 2016. This facility, known as Al Reyadah and jointly operated by ADNOC and Masdar, captures 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, with plans for a sixfold expansion by 2030. Al Reyadah marks the beginning of a CCUS network aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of Abu Dhabi’s economy while enhancing low-carbon power generation. Finally, Abu Dhabi’s energy industry has launched and expanded its nuclear energy program. The Barakah nuclear power plant, located in Al Dhafra, houses four reactors capable of meeting 25% of the UAE's electricity needs. Barakah is expected to prevent up to 22 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to removing 4.8 million cars from the roads.
