In a significant move aligning with the Abu Dhabi Vision and UAE national strategies, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has launched the Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalization Strategy (DSM) 2030. Unveiled during a press conference at the 24th World Energy Congress, this strategy is set to deliver substantial economic, system reliability, and environmental benefits. The DSM 2030 Strategy addresses critical supply and demand issues through a comprehensive nine-programme approach. These programmes aim to reduce electricity consumption by 22% and water consumption by 32% by 2030, based on a Business-as-Usual (BaU) baseline from 2013. This dual approach combines top-down goal setting with bottom-up evaluation to measure achievements against set targets. With energy demand in Abu Dhabi expected to rise steadily over the next decade—projected to grow by 1.4% annually until 2035—energy efficiency and rationalization have become paramount. Between 2007 and 2017, peak power demand surged by an average of 8.3% per year, driven by industrial activities, business sector growth, and increased exports to the Northern Emirates. The rising population and expanding economy have exacerbated the need to optimize system demand and rationalize consumption. The nine core DSM programmes are pivotal in this endeavor. They include Building Retrofits, Demand Response, Efficient Water Use/Re-use, Building Regulations, Street Lighting, District Cooling, Standards & Labels, Energy Storage, and Rebates & Awareness. Abu Dhabi's proactive approach is exemplified by its role as Host Sponsor of the 24th World Energy Congress, held in the UAE capital from September 9-12, 2019. Under the theme ""Towards A New Energy Era,"" the DoE’s exhibition stand at ADNEC offered visitors an immersive experience with high-tech zones showcasing the emirate’s advancements in the energy sector. The Energy Efficiency Zone, in particular, detailed the key components of the Abu Dhabi DSM 2030 Strategy and its nine core programmes.
