While Creativeworld is the biggest success of the arts and crafts in Frankfurt today, the city has always been a historical centre for crafting going back centuries. Currently, a renaissance of all the city’s forgotten craft traditions is underway, embodied by the Manufactory Promenade. Spanning approximately 22,000 square meters of space for various handicraft companies and 6000 square meters for an accompanying vocational school, this ambitious project aims to breathe new life into age-old artisanal practices. Based along the Frankfurt Bridges, the Manufactory Promenade hopes to reignite passion among the newer generations to keep these traditional crafting techniques well and alive. Over 300 young apprentices are undergoing training in nearly 30 traditional craft businesses and the promenade serves as a vital hub for preserving heritage skills and nurturing the next generation of artisans. In an era dominated by mass production and disposable consumerism, the Manufactory Promenade aims to remind people of the enduring value of handmade, high-quality goods. Crafted from renewable or natural materials, the products from these workshops boast exceptional durability and sustainability, which is mostly not the case with their mass-produced counterparts. By promoting the repair and reuse of broken objects through repair cafes and hobby pop-ups, the promenade fosters a culture of resourcefulness and respect for the items we own. This message couldn’t be any more urgent in a world plagued by environmental concerns and consumer waste. To that end, the Manufactory Promenade offers a ray of hope.
