Upcoming Trade Shows Frankfurt am Main, Germany for Architecture
Light + Building 2026, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
8 - 13 Mar 2026
The architectural identity of Frankfurt's old city has stood as a testament to centuries of organic growth and transformation. Yes, much of modern architecture projects have to do with sustainable construction, use of prefabrication, sourcing local materials and biophilic design that aims to restore the vital connection people have with nature. However, it’s also important to note that Frankfurt architects are also committed to adaptive reuse, conservation and restoration.
No other project in recent years exemplifies this than the restoration of the historic centre, which was destroyed during World War II. But history came back alive again thanks to the remarkable collaborative effort between the community and local authorities that has allowed time to seemingly rewind, resurrecting the old city to its former glory. Today, this resurrected quarter is known as the ""Neue Altstadt"" or New Old Town, a project that has stirred both admiration and controversy at the time. The ambitious project began in November 2014, focusing on the restoration of the 35 old houses, and concluded successfully in 2017.
Before the ambitious reconstruction plans took shape, this area served primarily as a parking lot, offering access to governmental facilities such as the Bürgeramt. It had garnered a reputation for being unsafe due to incidents of drug use. However, the determined restoration efforts aimed not only to rebuild but also to rejuvenate the spirit of this historic quarter.
The architectural fusion within the Neue Altstadt beautifully encapsulates Frankfurt's history within a contemporary context. Thirty-five houses were meticulously reworked, with a keen eye for detail. Fifteen existing structures were faithfully reconstructed, while twenty new ones were introduced, seamlessly blending in with the characteristic style of the old town. Every architectural design sought to mirror the historical structures, ensuring a harmonious integration into the overall development.
