The architecture industry in Nuremberg has tightly specialized in the field of restoration of what’s already there. Given its 1000-year history, the city has a treasure trove of architectural wonders as well as a sprawling urban environment, which architects have to work to preserve. They’re having to strike a perfect balance between modernity and the historical spirit of Nuremberg. One of the best projects to showcase this process is the design for a new campus for the Evangelical Lutheran Church designed by two architectural firms, Carmody Groarke and Riehle+Assoziierte.
At the heart of this visionary project lies a commitment to preserving the essence of Nuremberg's architectural heritage while ushering in a new era of purpose and functionality. The concept behind the campus revives the city block by introducing a vibrant public square, positioning the Church as an outward-facing institution that welcomes all.
This innovative church campus will serve a multitude of functions, including housing two independent theological colleges, regional administration offices, congressional facilities for the synod of Bavaria, a 100-room student hostel, a nursery and a public chapel. It's a testament to the multifaceted role the Church plays in the community, and aims to improve its accessibility to the general public.
The existing tower and podium building, remnants of the post-war reconstruction of Nuremberg, mark a transition in urban and architectural character from the medieval walled city. The project's brilliance lies in its approach to transformation. Precast-concrete wall panels will make way for new lightweight timber structures, expanding the existing building's footprint by 10,000 square meters and keeping the core values of sustainability. Retaining the essence of the existing building, architects are revitalizing areas that have outlived their purpose while introducing new structures that enhance the institution both organizationally and environmentally. It’s a clever showcase of adaptive reuse in a highly communicative city area.
