Over 700 companies in this forward-looking sector employ approximately 8,000 individuals, working on diverse solutions from air and water purification technologies to renewable energy sources and environmentally oriented financial services. A significant strength of Nuremberg’s energy industry lies in the synergistic combination of energy technology and high-performance electronics. The region boasts substantial research and development capabilities. The College of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg and other nearby institutions offer comprehensive academic programs in energy and environmental technology, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled professionals. Applied research is a cornerstone of Nuremberg’s success in the energy sector. The city is home to two Fraunhofer Institutes, the Center for Research and Development of Special Technology in Schwabach, and the Center for Applied Energy Technology in Würzburg. These institutions, along with various other companies, engage in intensive research activities. The Center for Innovation and Company Establishment in Energy Technology (etz) in South Nuremberg is a notable success story. Over the past few years, 23 firms have set up operations here, working on cutting-edge energy technology projects.
