Hannover has made moves to outgrow its background in heavy industries and reoriented itself within the broader medical sector, having developed a growing health industry. Today, the region of Hannover stands out as one of Germany’s foremost healthcare hubs. The region boasts a robust network of hospitals, care facilities, research institutes, and high-tech companies specializing in eHealth, solidifying its role as a key player in the national and international healthcare landscape. As of 2021, the healthcare sector is the dominant industry in the Hannover Region, with approximately 525,000 employees, of which about 80,000 work in hospitals, medical practices, pharmacies, retirement and care homes, and home care services. This makes healthcare the leading sector in the region’s economy, surpassing traditional pillars like skilled crafts and logistics, and significantly outpacing sectors such as automotive and financial services.
The region’s prominence in healthcare is exemplified by several notable institutions. Hannover Medical School (MHH) remains front and centre, renowned globally for its expertise in cardiology and implantology. With 7,500 employees and 3,400 students, MHH integrates medical care, education, and research. The International Neuroscience Institute Hannover (INI), led by the neurosurgeon Madjid Samii, also contributes to Hannover's reputation. INI’s specialization in neurosurgery has earned it international acclaim, with branches extending to Beijing and Tehran.
In addition to these flagship institutions, the Klinikum Region Hannover (KRH) hospital group plays a crucial role in providing general medical care. With 8,000 employees across ten locations, KRH is one of Germany’s largest public-sector hospital operators and offers a broad range of services throughout the region. Similarly, DIAKOVERE, Lower Saxony’s largest non-profit company, operates three major healthcare sites and recently opened a new maternity unit, Henrike, at the independent children’s hospital “auf der Bult” in 2023.
