Upcoming Trade Shows Amsterdam, Netherlands for Shipping

Amsterdam is not only maintaining its role as a key European logistics hub with a booming shipping industry, but also steering toward a sustainable future. The Port of Amsterdam, the second-largest port in the Netherlands, is setting ambitious targets to become a leading center for clean shipping, renewable energy, and the circular economy by 2040. Central to this ambition is the port's recently unveiled four-year strategy for 2025 to 2028, titled “On course toward a future-proof port complex.” Developed in close collaboration with industry stakeholders and awaiting formal approval by the Amsterdam City Council, the plan sets the stage for a gradual phase-out of fossil-based activities. In their place, the port aims to scale up renewable energy production, low-emission logistics, and circular industrial processes. The strategy includes concrete infrastructure upgrades, such as new shore power facilities powered by green offshore energy. These will allow ships docked at the port to plug into clean electricity rather than burning fossil fuels while idling, significantly reducing emissions. Additionally, the port will offer bunkering facilities for renewable fuels, supporting vessels that run on biofuels, methanol, or hydrogen. In this regard, Amsterdam fully steps in line with the overarching European strategy to decarbonize maritime logistics and creates the very blueprint for other ports. The port already offers robust facilities for container transport and is a major advocate of short sea shipping, a sustainable alternative to long-distance road transport. Despite the shift in focus toward clean energy, Amsterdam remains a powerhouse in traditional cargo operations. The port is a major player in dry bulk handling, from agribulk and industrial minerals to biomass and scrap metal, which is the reason for its importance for the international shipping industry. Specialized terminals, located next to deep-water quays, ensure seamless logistics with their own rail and inland navigation links.
