Over the past decade, Milan has made significant strides in leaving an impact on the global pharmaceuticals industry particularly in the area of research and development. The city received substantial investments, doubled down on research activity and upgraded its infrastructure in the service of advancing medical science and technology. Italy ranks among the top three European Union countries for research and development (R&D) in pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmaceutical research. Milan, in particular, stands out with its concentration of research hospitals, startups, and corporations focusing on precision medicine. This focus is exemplified by successful biotech spinoffs such as Genenta and Molmed, which have made significant strides in their respective fields. Milan’s pharmaceuticals industry invests over €432 million annually in R&D. This investment supports a broad spectrum of research, including orphan drugs and advanced treatments for cancer and other diseases with clinical and epidemiological relevance. Currently, around 300 new biotech products are in the testing phase. Lombardy’s regional government plays a crucial role in national research programs aimed at developing advanced cancer therapies. Local hospitals are integral to international research initiatives like the European consortium EURE-CART, which strives to position the EU at the forefront of immunotherapy. The European Institute of Oncology, based in Milan, is ranked 11th globally for cancer research, highlighting the city's international standing in this critical area. Milan is also a major center for clinical trials, particularly for rare diseases and orphan drugs. Impressively, 2 out of every 10 advanced clinical trials approved in the EU are conducted in Italy. The city's pharmaceutical and medical device sectors benefit from a strong pipeline of drug candidates and a thriving network of research institutions. Accounting for 28% of Italy’s biotech sector, Milan is home to over 250 biotech companies, life science trade bodies, and the Human Technopole, a new research institute for Genomics and Computational Biology.
