Upcoming Trade Shows Milan, Italy for Heating
MCE 2026, Milan, Italy
24 - 27 Mar 2026
Milan has undertaken a massive project to revolutionize district heating and cooling networks by spearheading the REWARDHeat project, which is set to take current trends in heating innovations and apply them in practice. The project’s final goal is to establish cutting-edge, low-temperature district heating and cooling networks capable of harnessing renewable and waste heat at lower temperatures. The result will see Milan’s heating industry achieve energy efficiency, while also leading the charge in promoting decarbonization.
Operated by A2A Calore & Servizi, the Milan demonstrator is a big component of REWARDHeat, featuring two pilot sites strategically located in Viale Gadio and Via Balilla. These small-scale networks operate at neutral temperatures and integrate renewable energy sources (RES) and waste heat. The project aims to prove the effectiveness of decentralized solutions in urban settings. Along with the implementation of low-temperature district heating networks and substations at the building level, the project aims to initiate smart monitoring and control, and develop new business models that are tailored to Milan specifically.
This demonstrator features a state-of-the-art low-temperature district heating network that uses excess heat from an electric transformer. The waste heat, which prior would dissipate in the air, then becomes a valuable thermal source at a constant 30/40°C throughout the year. This heat will be harnessed for space heating in the municipal aquarium and inside the electrical cabinet through the use of heat pumps and booster heat pumps in coordination with centralized thermal energy storage systems.
The Via Balilla demonstrator focuses on a neutral-temperature district heating network that turns to groundwater from existing wells as a thermal source. High-density polypropylene pipes will carry the heat from groundwater wells, maintaining a consistent temperature between 10°C and 15°C throughout the year. This sustainable source will cater to the thermal needs of a kindergarten, municipal center, and residential building via heat pumps.
