Recent technological trends in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry demonstrate a rising level of technological sophistication as the next generation of HVAC systems liberates consumers with a whole new spectrum of capabilities. Traditional HVAC systems offer limited control and are not quite as energy efficient. Two things that are about to change now that the Internet of Things has fully penetrated the market, giving birth to connect HVAC systems. These systems leverage IoT to enable remote monitoring and control. Smart thermostats and sensors offer real-time data and sensitive controls allow consumers to make precise adjustments to their comfort without running a high energy bill. It’s also worth noticing that the industry has made allowance for retrofit solutions as a transitionary step between old and new systems, which avoids having to sink large sums into extensive infrastructure changes.
As these technologies are at the cusp of becoming universally widespread, several companies rise to the occasion. US-based startup Vetralis is at the forefront of HVAC monitoring. Their product meticulously tracks pressure and temperature in refrigerant lines. The IoT device is compatible with residential and commercial AC or heat pump units, providing alerts to detect issues promptly. Vetralis empowers homeowners and building managers to take control of their energy usage without the need for WiFi or Bluetooth. Another startup, Sensgreen in the UAE, introduces an IoT platform that oversees HVAC aspects, including radiators, air conditioners and plugs, through LoRaWAN-based devices, which support remote management and smart control.
Another technological trend that’s changing the landscape is predictive maintenance, which addresses issues surrounding airflow imbalances, refrigerant leaks and clogged filters. These issues compromise efficiency, increase energy consumption, and elevate maintenance costs. Predictive maintenance platforms utilize sensors, data analytics and machine learning to identify early signs of HVAC issues so that timely repairs can be scheduled appropriately ahead of time.
